Injuries and deformities of the face may result from many causes. The most common is car accidents. Fortunately since the development of Air bags, the number of severe facial fractures is decreasing. However, we still see a significant number of patients who either have facial fractures, or have significant soft tissue injury to the face. Plastic surgery is the specialty with the greatest experience in treatment of such patients. Surgeons who specialize in this aspect of plastic surgery are called Maxillo-facial surgeons. In patients who have facial fractures, broken pieces bone are put back together and kept in position with small screws and plates. The soft tissues that have been damaged are repaired and the face is restored by reconstructive techniques. Facial reconstruction has also been used for a variety of occlusal problems with dentition. Plastic surgeons work in conjunction with dentist and oral surgeons to bring the upper and lower teeth in proper alignment. These adjustments in the facial skeleton often have a significant beneficial affect on the overall facial balance and harmony.
