Plastic and Reconstructive surgery is the primary specialty in medicine that deals with congenital deformities. Since the advent of modern plastic surgery after World War I the methods learned in reconstruction of mutilated faces and bodies of war victims have been used to reconstruct and create normal shapes and features in patients with congenital deformities. Cleft lip and palate surgery is perhaps of the deformities that most people know about. However there are many less common types of deformities that can result during the development of the fetus.
